Proof that 0 = -1
I stumbled across this in my high school Calculus BC class. Here's a challenge for my fellow math geeks - what is wrong here?
Given:
Let
- Therefore,
![{\displaystyle \mathbf {v} =-\mathbf {cos(x)} }](https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/media/math/render/svg/1c4e6e96a3c49bba2b21db8a93f54afc0e266000)
Let
- Therefore,
![{\displaystyle \mathbf {du} =\mathbf {sec(x)*tan(x)*dx} }](https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/media/math/render/svg/283b6ea74f564f9372014819f1693f15b630d01c)
- Substitute from above.
- Sec(x) * cos(x) = 1
- Group the minus signs.
- (Subtract the integral from each side)
- Voilà - a logical inconsistency.
